Ethiopia is struggling from its worst drought for 30 years with millions in dire need of life saving aid, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned on January 31, 2016.
Here is a round-up of global news developments:
International charity organizations have warned that severe drought in Ethiopia is threatening the lives of at least six million children. The organizations say the drought has led to critical food shortage. Ethiopia has called on the international community to donate more food aid as the drought intensifies.
Pro-Palestine activists have staged a protest rally outside the UK headquarters of an arms manufacturing company to condemn its involvement in developing a drone for Israel. The protesters in the town of Crawley accuse Tha-les of benefiting from Israel’s crackdown against Palestinians. Tha-les denies the allegations.
Leader of Britain’s Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, has slammed Prime Minister David Cameron after the premier admitted to benefiting from a Panama-based offshore trust set up by his late father. Corbyn said Cameron has misled the public and lost the trust of the British people.
Belgian authorities have arrested two terror suspects, including Mohamed Abrini who was wanted in connection with last November's deadly Paris attacks. Investigators are now trying to determine if Abrini is the same man seen on security camera footage at Brussels airport alongside two suicide bombers on March 22.
Parisians once again hit the streets to condemn the government’s proposed labor reforms. The government argues the measures will boost the economy by encouraging firms to hire more staff. Demonstrators, however say the reforms will strip away vital protections.
Spain's Socialists have accused the far-left Podemos party of blocking the formation of a coalition government with centrist group Ciudadanos. Podemos leader has been accused of closing the door to a government formed by parties that demand change in Spain. Spain's parties have until May 2 to form a coalition.
US Secretary of State John Kerry says retaking the city of Mosul from ISIL terrorists is a top priority, but operations are at an early stage. Kerry also said ISIL terrorists have not been on the offensive for months. He made the comments during a visit to Iraq, after talks with Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has warned that the war in Syria has provided a breeding ground for extremists, who are spreading like a cancer around the world. Ban urged a radical rethink of ways to curb the global terrorist threat. He said that heavy-handed responses have sometimes been counter-productive."
